The invention of synthetic turf in the early 1960s has had a tremendous impact on the way in which sports and recreational activities are conducted and viewed. But while synthetic turf has proven itself as an athletic surface for the highest levels of competition, its merits have been the subject of almost constant debate.

Debate continues over the health impacts from playing on synthetic turf fields, but the high surface-level temperatures recorded on these fields compared to natural turf have been well-documented.
Although the synthetic turf fields are more expensive to install than natural ones, the parks department says they are cost-effective when their life span and maintenance costs are factored in. A natural field costs an average of $152,739 a year, versus a maximum of $105,000 a year for synthetic turf, according to figures recently provided by department spokesman Philip Abramson.
The debate is over synthetic turf, used to blanket lawns, park spaces, and athletic fields where children and adults relax and play; the questions are whether synthetic turf is safe for human and environmental health, and whether its advantages outweigh those of natural grass.
There will always be a place in the parks system for natural growing grass as synthetic turf fields are not appropriate in all situations. However, in some cases where a high demand for sports field’s reservations and field sports play exists, synthetic turf fields will be considered as a solution.
