Research efforts at the LSU AgCenter have determined the cold tolerance, water requirements and fertilizer requirements of common carpetgrass. Seed is small, about 1 mm long, and available for $3 to $4 per pound.

Carpetgrass for Lawns. Carpetgrass Axonopus isn't the prettiest grass, but it will sustain growth in poor soil and shady, damp areas. Its medium-coarse texture and light green color are very similar to centipede grass. I like to say that it looks like starving St. Augustinegrass.

OP I did send your photos to Dr Strahan with with the LSU AgCenter and he could not identify with certainty without a seedhead but he said he leaned towards it being broadleaf carpet grass or Alexander Grass creeping signal grass. If you want to leave a small area not mowed to develop a seedhead a positive ID can be made.

Lawn care definitely changes as the weather begins to cool, and by October the growth of warm-season grasses like St. Augustine, centipede, Bermuda and zoysia begins to slow down. As a result, now is not a good time to do anything that would disrupt or damage the turf such as filling, aerification or dethatching.
